Closing the psychological distance for communication, beyond the restrictions of time and space

Since 2019, Hyundai Glovis has been promoting communication between CEO and employees through CEO Meet-Up. As communication became more difficult with COVID-19, we decided to make it more special by sprinkling over some fun. To emphasize the communication between all employees, rather than just with the CEO, we changed the name to Glovis Meet-Up, and moderated in-depth conversations among all generations from different spaces within the new building.

Under the theme of “Signal of My Dream,” the event borrowed ideas from the TV series, “Signal,” and used the walkie-talkie radio as a means of communication between the past and the future, as well as communication between generations. All Glovis people alike, from new employees to senior employees, new executives, directors, and CEO, engaged in having conversations with each other and asking questions from a different space and time.

What was more special about Glovis Meet-Up is that it connected the 20th anniversary of the founding and the relocation to the new building. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, employees recorded video letters to their future selves in 20 years and questions to seniors overcoming physical and psychological distancing. Also celebrating the relocation to the new building, representatives of each generation shot videos from different G-Hub locations and introduced various parts of the new office building.

The employees featured in the videos included new employees that have been hired through a whopping competition rate of 150:1, middle managers and senior employees who have made considerable contributions to the company, newly appointed executives that are starting fresh with a new mindset, the division directors who have varied experience in work and company life, and the CEO who oversees the entire company. The Q&A time with the CEO was broadcasted live and all other videos of employees were pre-recorded. Even though the employees communicated with each other from different time and space in the video, they were deeply interconnected. So this time, we reorganized the conversation in the videos as if they were actually talking in the same space and time. Here is a snip of the dialogue that took place without a walkie-talkie radio.

New Employee Hello seniors! I am a new employee who recently joined the company with strong motivation and determination. I would like to ask a question as you all have much more experience than I have.

Senior I am still pretty new here. It feels strange to be called a senior.

New Employee But you have more experience. Do you have anything that you wish you had done that is not related to work?

Senior There are so many things related to work, but besides those, I would say, working out. New employees spend so much time in the office that they forget to take care of themselves.

New Executive That's something I want to emphasize as well. Good work comes from good health.

Senior I want to ask my seniors something else. This is a question I can ask because I have experienced company life a little bit. Since you are newly appointed, I think you know what the differences between our company and other companies are. What made you decide to work at Hyundai Glovis?
New Executive I thought it was an opportunity for innovation. Looking at the direction of business, I felt that Glovis is a company that is serious about new business. What stood out the most for me was the company's continuous growth. Even though it may be difficult, I want to be part of this exciting process. Being a relatively young company, it seems like it is full of energy, too. I am looking forward to the future that we will pioneer together.

Division Director Do you have any questions for me? I also went through quite a lot, so I think I might have some answers.

New Executive I have something to say. It is not really a question, though. As it says in Hyundai Glovis Lifestyle 11, it seems like the organizational culture encourages employees to take vacations or go off work when work is done. I noticed that you also put that into practice in your daily life.

Division Director Our employees are already passionate and competent. If we can establish a corporate culture that promotes communication, our work will gain momentum and we will be able to perform better and faster. Then, after 20 years, we might be ranked at the top of the New York Stock Exchange. If it happens, I will proudly compliment everyone, including myself.
