Do you know ‘SLoSol’? SLoSol is curtailing word for Smart Logistics Solution Team. The staffs of SLoSol, including Jang Hyun-sun, Senior Manager of Technical Sales WG, Jung Sung-woo, Senior Manager of Consulting WG, Yoon Jae-sik, Senior Manager of SE WG, and Lee Jung-cheol, Senior Manager of PM WG, gathered together to share their plans for 2024 and shouted, “SLoSol, go for it in 2024!”.

It’s great to meet you all. Please tell us about yourself.

hello. I am in charge of selling smart logistics automation technology for general logistics (e-commerce, etc.) and manufacturing logistics (factory automation) in the Smart Logistics Solution Team.

This is my 18th year in the logistics business and I am currently working in logistics consulting. I am fascinated by the idea of implementing realistic and optimized logistics solutions based on my numerous experiences and enjoy my work.

I have been working as an engineer for more than 10 years since I graduated. I’m looking for fun in my work while challenging myself with new things.

The Project manager is a total solution engineer who can handle the entire process of designing, manufacturing, installing, and commissioning automated logistics equipment. I am the youngest member of the PM WG, but I am working hard to become an engineer who can lead the team.

Technical Sales WG. (From left to right) Ahn Sung-min, Kim Min-hyun, Kim Bo-reum, Cho Il-hyung, Jang Hyun-sun, and Lee Young-seop.

Please tell us about your responsibilities.

I am responsible for identifying market conditions for general and manufacturing logistics, finding customers, making technical proposals for smart logistics solutions, and finally participating in bidding and winning orders. Of course, even after winning an order, we continue to follow up with customers to ensure that we receive reorders, and we also promote our business team to new customers.

As a consultant, I work on logistics automation consulting. Logistics is done in different ways in different areas. I analyze these areas to standardize and unify processes and propose automation solutions.

As a systems engineer, I’m responsible for mechanical parts. I design layouts, calculate examples, and make suggestions to meet the needs of customers who need logistics automation. I think logistics automation is a fascinating field because there are many non-standardized parts, so you can constantly learn by thinking and discussing each time.

Currently, he is the general PM of the Hyundai Mobis Mexico project and is in charge of the engine automation warehouse logistics line. The Mexico engine line consists of S/C, Rack and CV logistics equipment, and I am in charge of PJT schedule, budget, production, installation and commissioning. At present, the OFF LINE TEST has been well completed and the ship has been packed for export and shipped to Mexico.

The project progress depends on organic collaboration between WGs, what is the work process?

Consulting-related projects begin with sales. It begins with market research, customer prospecting, and management by the Sales WG, and continues with data analysis, layout design, design simulation, and proposal preparation by the Consulting WG. The System Engineering WG then analyzes the results to design the equipment, layout the equipment, combine the organic equipment, and calculate the cost of the equipment, and the Sales WG submits the final proposal. The project is then finalized by the PM WG, which manages equipment delivery, construction management, and after-sales service.

Let’s take the Hyundai Green Food project as an example. First, after identifying the customer and understanding the customer’s needs, SE analyzes the customer’s as-is situation (volume, production lines, etc.) and presents a to-be model. At the same time, SE designs suitable equipment, selects and applies items through cost analysis, and concludes a contract with the customer through quotation and price negotiation in Technical Sales. After the contract is signed, PM carries out the construction work and hands over the plant to the customer after installation and commissioning. After that, maintenance work is performed according to the terms of the contract with the customer.

In the case of logistics centers, the role of sales, consulting, and engineers is very important to complete the proposed project. When communicating with customers, analyzing their needs, designing, and putting our experience and know-how into a proposal, it is difficult to create synergy without respect and consideration, even if each person’s work is outstanding. Therefore, I think respect and trust between each other are important for a project to go well.

Once the order is confirmed by the Sales WG, the PM WG takes over various materials such as layout, cost, and specifications that were initially reviewed by the SE WG. The PM WG then reviews the entire execution process, including schedule, budget, and specifications. In the case of the Mexico PJT, a TFT was set up to facilitate communication between the people in charge, enabling them to share accurate information and work more efficiently within a short period of time, resulting in minimal errors.

What has recently been the greatest issue regarding your work?

The number of projects we need to pre-sale has increased recently due to our growing recognition in the logistics automation market. As a result, we are working to strengthen our workforce and secure talented people for the pre-sales phase.

In the case of the Consulting WG, we are having some difficulty handling consulting requests from various industries with our current staff.

I think it’s important to create a work system because I haven’t started the logistics automation business for a long time. In order to maintain the business for a long time and to adapt new talents to the organization and train them quickly, work processes and data must be manualized. I would like to create such a system with my colleagues through past experience.

We recently conducted an OLT inspection to test the durability of the equipment, and it was not easy to satisfy the customer’s needs because there were so many of them. However, we worked with the control and computer staff to organize a test scenario so that they could see the peak performance of the equipment, and we satisfied the customer’s needs by creating, editing, and providing OLT videos for customers who could not visit the site.

Tell us about some of your recent accomplishments

We are entering the general and manufacturing logistics market with Mushinsa, Hyundai Green Food, Mobis in Mexico, and many others, and are focusing on expanding the market by creating various business models such as leasing models. We are also expanding overseas by establishing cooperative relationships with domestic and overseas partners.

Recently, we created a concept for the Hyundai Glovis Incheon Airport Logistics Center. We decided that it was an important project for the team, so we actively worked on it and created something from nothing, and now we are working on refining it piece by piece.

Instead of an achievement, there is a project for the development of an automatic stacker crane that I would like to do well.

We recently won a project and completed the underlying construction safely, so we are building a reference one step at a time. I will continue to work with the team to the best of my ability to help grow the business.

“All that’s left to do is make money!”

Teamwork seems to be very important. Do you have any tips on how to communicate well?

I always treat my teammates with respect and courtesy, and I always listen to them with great respect, regardless of their age. I also try to be the person they need me to be.

I think respect is the most important thing. I listen, talk, ask again, and try not to hurt the other person’s feelings. I’m not much of a talker, but outside of work I try to get to know my teammates by starting with light topics, getting to know them, and talking about myself.

I try to organize tea time to communicate with our team members, and we take advantage of the nearby Seoul Forest to go for a walk after lunch to build familiarity through conversation.

I tend to reach out to others first. Even at work, I ask my junior colleagues how they are doing, and for senior colleagues, I sometimes say, “You’re having a hard time.”

What are your thoughts on the current and future of logistics automation technology?

Having experienced many sites in the logistics automation market, I don’t think there are many fully automated sites. Of course, there are various solutions that incorporate smart solutions (IoT, digital twins, AI, etc.), and I can say that the level of sanitization and quality stabilization is rising. However, the limitations of some inbound and outbound logistics automation solutions, as well as the lack of a reasonable ROI, can lead to a lack of investment in logistics automation.
In the future, the demand for equipment customization will increase, and DX will shift from intelligent AI to generative AI. To prepare for this and expand the market, we believe that investment in DX should be revitalized along with talent acquisition.

The current level of logistics automation technology is very high. However, there are still many warehouses based on manual labor, such as distribution, parcel delivery, trade, and hazardous materials. The challenges in these facilities are conveyors and AGVs that automate movement, and the movement of workers is also being automated with technologies such as GTP stations, where cargo is delivered to workers unattended. As a result, the automation of logistics movements is progressing, but other areas that rely on manual labor remain a challenge for automation.

If we divide the logistics automation technology into H/W and S/W, we believe that unlike in the past when we relied on the advanced equipment of European and other advanced companies, the H/W manufacturing technology of not only domestic companies but also Chinese companies has made great progress, and has risen to the level of the world. S/W that organically connects these H/W can be said to be the core of logistics automation technology, and I believe that S/W and AI technology will continue to develop in the future.
And in the future, it seems that the demand for technology will continue to change depending on the operation trend of automated warehouses. If it is a traditional warehouse that uses conveyors to move goods in and out of the warehouse, the demand for AGV/AMR equipment has been increasing in recent years, considering the efficiency of movement and flexibility of the equipment. I think we need to think about the next trend after these facilities become traditional.

I agree. Automation technologies such as smart factories, mobility technologies, and AI are improving every day, but I think we are still getting used to automated logistics technologies. Cars are being started and controlled by mobile phones, and factories in industrial parks are managing and operating equipment with tablet PCs to increase the efficiency of maintenance and production. I believe the future of automation technology has a lot to offer, and I think we will see further developments that will make it easier and easier to use and manage in various fields such as automobiles, chemicals, clothing, food, and more.

How do you rate the competitiveness of the Smart Logistics Solution Team?

Our core competitiveness is that we can provide turnkey system solutions from consulting to construction and maintenance, and our experts in each field have the ability to carry out domestic and international projects, and we can provide customized solutions by combining various hardware based on Altiol’s (subsidiary) WCS.

I also think we are a team that is always ready to do anything. I think there is no greater competitive advantage than when experts in each field come together and work organically as a team. It is said that anyone can be in the business of intelligent logistics solutions. But not just anyone can. Our team, a group of experts, is proud to be a competitive team that can do what no one else can do.

I think the experience of our people from different fields is our biggest competitive advantage right now. We look forward to creating lasting results by leveraging our experience from working with every operator and manufacturer.

That’s right, our team is made up of the best engineers in sales, consulting, SE, PM, and so on. We strive to be the best engineers we can be, and we’re made up of experts from different industries, so if we trust each other and work together based on our individual abilities, I think that’s the best competitive advantage.

For the first half of 2024, what are your plans and goals?

We aim to strengthen order activities to ensure performance in each industry (automotive, battery, etc.) and strengthen talented personnel to expand sales.

We have a number of important projects that we are working on. The goal is for all consultants to collaborate, advise, and propose without any problems so that we can win the project with good results.

Orders and work performance are good, but we are still in the stage of solidifying the organization, so I think one of the important goals is to create a good teamwork system. As project members get used to each other’s styles and establish good teamwork, I think the work performance will naturally improve.

I will be traveling to Mexico for about three months this year. I’ve never been to Mexico before, so I’m half worried and half excited, but my goal is to prepare well and return safely from project. To do this, I plan to study English and Spanish. Second, I plan to prepare documents related to safety, insurance, and construction to prevent accidents, bring equipment, and create a rigging plan so there are no installation problems.
