Senior manager Wang Han-wool established the development direction of each business area in the shipping business in 2023 and achieved excellent results by introducing ships and promoting new contracts. In addition, he was honored with the top individual award for his significant contributions to raising new environmentally friendly carriers and cost reduction. Among them, it was the new LNG shipping project that made the most profound impression on Senior manager Wang.

“Due to our business structure, getting stakeholders to agree on cash flow took a lot of work. However, we received much support from the Shipping Division, the Financial Management Office, and the RCM Office. This was the most meaningful project for me because it was difficult. I want to thank everyone who helped me win this well-deserved award. My teammates shared many of my needs during the project, so it’s like a prize for all of us. I will take this as a reminder to play a more supportive role in the future and support the frontline departments in their business endeavors. I will use the prize money to spend a warm holiday season with my teammates.”

According to Senior manager Yoon Ho-sik, the most significant achievement of 2023 was the revision of the Customs Act. Early last year, Senior manager Yoon received complaints from the steel cargo export industry. He submitted the “Amendment to the Notification of Shipboard Export Declaration” to the Korea Customs Service, which would revolutionize the existing regulations. To formulate a practical proposal, Senior manager Yoon made several field visits to the docks, which allowed him to understand the problems from the perspective of cargo managers and the industry. However, the biggest challenge was presenting the existing law’s problems in a way that everyone could understand. It wasn’t easy to convince the relevant stakeholders who are not in charge of the actual field and the relevant legal stakeholders who are in charge of the existing laws and regulations. Still, he overcame the difficulties by visiting steel loading docks such as Dangjin and seeing the problems in the loading process firsthand. “I’m grateful for the active support of the Cargo Quality Management Team, the Bulk Steel Shipping Business Team 2
, and shipping agents,” Senior manager Yoon says. As a result, our proposals were accepted. In November, the proposed amendments to the “Notice on Export Customs Clearance Administration” were issued, as well as proposed amendments to laws and regulations that could benefit the shipping and steel industries. Our year-long work has finally come to fruition.

“First of all, it is a family honor to receive such a great award, and I am pleased to think that we have helped the shipping and steel industries by revising the relevant laws and regulations of the Customs Act. The big task of revising the relevant laws and regulations must be done with help. It was possible because of our company’s network of various experts and the positive feedback from representative organizations such as the Korea Customs Service. I want to thank supervisor Choi Young-jin, supervisor Jung Yong-yup, supervisor Wi Yong-seop, and Senior manager Bae Joon, Bulk Steel Shipping Business Team 2, who actively supported the due diligence of the Dangjin Port of the Korea Customs Service and meetings with the Korea Shipping Association. I would also like to thank Executive director Kim Hee-joon and Director Jeong Chung-mo for their encouragement and support. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to Team leader Park Dong-seong and Senior manager Jung Se-young Jung for their generous feedback on this revision.”

Among his many accomplishments in 2023, Senior Manager Han Hyun-kyu’s most impressive work was the pricing of containerized ocean transportation for an unaffiliated client. He consistently identified new routes and partners to meet the client’s needs. He secured competitive pricing to support business from various destinations, including Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. As a new business, there were, of course, challenges. There were a lot of new things that needed to be set up, such as ocean transportation routes and shipping lines. He recognized the importance of making timely decisions based on a clear understanding of the business, so he regularly exchanged opinions with relevant departments and partners to get a sense of direction.

“Thank you for this great recognition at the end of a great year. This award is for the Global Pricing Office, which strives to secure freight rate competitiveness until the very end. We will continue to work hard and do our best to improve the competitiveness of the Global Logistics Division.”

For Senior Manager Han Seung-hoon, the year 2023 will be remembered for switching a non-affiliated OEM customer’s cargo to container ships. Due to a global vessel shortage, the customer needed help to obtain vessels for their export fleet. A responsible party decided they could fulfill the customer’s transportation contract by reducing cargo weight on other routes to conserve vessels. As a result, the contract avoided an empty vessel, improved the bottom line, and brought in new business for different lines of business, creating a win-win situation. Because no one else utilizes container ships for high volumes, the mission required much simulation to succeed. Even if you have experience in the shipping industry, the business structure and operations of carriers, bulk carriers, and container ships are different. The answer to this seemingly impossible business was “people.” He emphasized again that business is all about people, and preparing one by one through the connections and networks of local employees produced good results.

“For a shipper accustomed to carrier services, shipping via containers was like first asserting the theory of perpetual motion, but we won a large order with a package idea that synthesized the customer’s multiple needs and provided a solution. LivingLiving with the belief and expectation that there will be a better tomorrow than today and erasing the word give up, has led me to win a big award again in 2018. However, I never built a container business on my own. Still, with the support of my seniors and juniors who spent time and effort with me, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude.”

In the 2023 Group Organizational Culture Assessment, the KD Business Office showed the most significant increase in scores compared to 2022 (80.4% year-on-year) and the most significant increase in the Lifestyle Practice, a Hyundai Globis-specific questionnaire. In addition, the company achieved the highest score in the G-Square 2.0 Work Style Practice. Efforts to improve the organizational culture were also noticeable, with leaders leading by example and employees actively participating in their workshops.

“This year, the KD Business Office discussed the two issues of establishing a smooth communication culture and improving work efficiency with all office members, and we adopted the best suggestions and implemented them over the year. I want to thank my colleagues in the KD Business Office for their active participation. Thanks to the support of the CEO and employees who listened to us regarding communication, we produced good results. Next year, we will continue to develop the organizational culture created this year and achieve great results.”
