Let’s listen to vivid on-site stories from Manager Jung Dong-wook Jung of the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center and Manager Cho Joon-hyung from the Mokpo Port Processing Center who oversee key services of port processing for finished vehicles.

What does the Processing Center mean to you?

The Pyeongtaek Processing Center is a caffeinated drink for me!

At the processing center, unexpected things occur every so often. I’m often flustered by novel incidents, but they also make my job more exciting and keep me focused.

Interview 1
Manager Dong-wook Jung, Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center

Please introduce yourself.

Hello. I’m Jung Dong-wook, and I am currently working as a manager at the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center. I’m on the older side of the millennial generation, and I joined Hyundai Glovis in 2020 as an experienced recruit.

What kind of place is the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center?

The Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center serves the background role of exportation port to complete ornamentation of Kia cars according to the countries to be exported and type (refers to open-air storage area and equipment) to allow them to be exported according to the port schedule.

We also apply an anti-corrosion wax to the lower chassis and frame components of export vehicles to prevent rusting during their export overseas.

We are located within the Poseung National Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do, with an area of 148,000 m2 and the capability for corrosion prevention and ornamentation of 450,000-500,000 vehicles per year. This year, it is expected that 64% of exported Kia cars will be shipped through Pyeongtaek Port, and 80% of these will be processed through the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center before being sent out to the world. I can confidently say that we have contributed to making the vehicle-exclusive Pyeongtaek Port into a major export hub.

What is a characteristic or unique point of pride for the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center that sets it apart from other processing centers?

The Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center is the oldest business since Hyundai Glovis was first established. Our current site was secured in 2002, and the anti-corrosion site was secured in 2004. For the past 18 years, we have contributed to the development of Hyundai Glovis as a comprehensive processing and distribution center by striving to improve the quality of exported vehicles and to provide the best processing services. Due to our long history, we also take special pride in our many great senior workers who work in the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center.

What is your area of work at the Pyeongtaek Port Processing Center?

I am mostly in charge of establishing the operation plan and managing our performance, environment, and assets for our production line and the key facilities to stably operate the anti-corrosion process.

What is the main issue or duty where you are focusing related to the job?

The biggest topic nowadays is safety. Our center and all of our employees are striving to create a safe workplace. Especially now, even small parts that might seem to be dangerous are removed in advance as we work to create a safe and good work environment. Recently, we have been able to remodel the supporting facilities, including the lounge and restroom, thanks to the support of the General Affairs Supporting Group. Thanks to this new environment, I believe that my colleagues have been able to refresh their minds and rest comfortably to enable them to work more safely and concentrate on their work. I am grateful to the head of the General Affairs Supporting Group and its team for their support.

What mindset and attitude do you have when you work on the anti-corrosion process, which is directly related to the lifespan of the vehicle?

The anti-corrosion process doesn’t show unsatisfactory parts immediately, but if the process isn’t performed properly for corrosion-prone steel parts, their quality will decline after a while. Our process may seem like a small cog in the wheel from the point of view of the Hyundai Motor Group headquarters, but we are proud to take part in improving quality, and always strive to smoothly operate the anti-corrosion process.

What principle do you value most when managing the assets of the processing center?

It may sound cliché, but I think that the ownership mindset is the most important. Considering how I spend half of my day at the company, I think that I shouldn’t just look at the company as an asset, but should manage it as a place where my colleagues and I can work and live our lives. With an ownership mindset, I have become more meticulous in my work, from small maintenance to major construction processes.

What moment felt most rewarding during your work?

Not long after I entered the company, I implemented the “Combined Anti-Corrosion Rationalization” project, and had difficulty and felt inadequate in many areas, from facility investment to managing the establishment, but I completed the project without any issues and received a satisfactory evaluation that felt the most rewarding.

But of course, I’m sure all employed people will agree that payday and bonuses feel rewarding too. (Laughs)

“This year, safety is the most important thing. I will strive to have a great day at work in a safe environment and finish the day with a smile.

Interview 2
Manager Cho Joon-hyung, Mokpo Port Processing Center

Please introduce yourself.

Hello. I’m Manager Cho Joon-hyung. I’m 31 years old, the youngest at the Mokpo Port Processing Center.

What kind of place is the Mokpo Port Processing Center?

The Mokpo Port Processing Center performs anti-corrosion processing for export vehicles manufactured at the Gwangju Plant, including the Sportage, Soul, Seltos, and Bongo models. It can process around 330,000 vehicles per year, and is operated by three Hyundai Glovis employees and 80 employees from partner companies.

What is a characteristic or unique point of pride for the Mokpo Port Processing Center that sets it apart from other processing centers?

I’m proud to say that we put safety first, and aren’t afraid to take our time and invest. The Mokpo Port Processing Center is the first Hyundai business center to independently participate in the “Safety and Health Cooperation Program” conducted by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) to improve our on-site safety and health management. Through collaboration with our partners, we have worked to identify and improve harmful and dangerous factors, and have been striving to achieve a high level of safety for the operation site through KOSHA’s technical support.

What is your area of work at the Mokpo Port Processing Center?

I manage the safety facility at the anti-corrosion processing site, and am in charge of managing expenses.

What is the main issue or duty where you are focusing related to the job?

My main duty is to respond to tasks related to the surge in anti-corrosion supply quantity. The supply coming into Mokpo Port Processing Center is expected to increase following delays in finished vehicle transport due to external factors.

On-site safety has become much more important due to the enactment of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. Has anything changed in terms of managing safety equipment?

We are devoting more time to safety management tasks by improving on-site communication and upgrading regular inspections to identify harmful and dangerous factors in advance. Recently, we have improved various parts of the site by improving the cooling and heating systems in order to improve the work environment as suggested by our field workers and by purchasing non-slip mats to prevent slipping accidents.

What is a virtue that you must have while managing expenses?

When managing monthly expenses, one requirement is to verify our legal duties. This is also related to managing overall construction issues, so I think that being meticulous is an important virtue.

What is the most memorable moment from your job?

The safety campaign, run independently by the Mokpo Port Processing Center this January, was the most memorable moment for me. During the event, we delivered rice cake lunch boxes and beverages with safety stickers on them. They were liked by everyone who received them, and I felt proud. After the event, we formed friendly relationships with business partners and TP drivers and were able to conduct safety improvement tasks, including compliance with company safety rules and wearing PPE to improve workplace safety management.
